Wood Carving Workshop at WoodArt Hoi An | My Review 2025
If you’re looking to do something other than visit temples or stroll through the old town, I really recommend trying the WoodArt wood carving workshop. I was looking for a hands-on activity, something more authentic, far from the overly touristy spots like Kim Bong village. And honestly, it was a great surprise.
The workshop is about 30 minutes from Hoi An, in a quiet spot surrounded by nature. You learn to carve wood by hand, in a relaxed setting, with passionate artists who share their craft without any fuss. It’s a real breath of fresh air and a great creative break.
Visit to the WoodArt Wood Carving Workshop in Hoi An

As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed by Duy, the talented sculptor and son of the founder of WoodArt, who gave me a tour of a small private museum located right inside the family workshop. You can instantly feel the passion and craftsmanship passed down through generations.
That’s where I discovered the works of his father, a renowned sculptor in Vietnam, with pieces that tell the history and legends of the country. It’s impressive to see how expressive wood can become in the hands of a true artist.

Then I moved into a second room, this time dedicated to Duy himself, better known as WoodArt Vietnam. He’s famous for his sculptures of modern and animated characters, and his YouTube channel has over one million subscribers.
This isn’t about traditional art, you’ll find Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Marvel, and more. That’s actually what I liked most. The level of detail is stunning. You can tell right away that the place is driven by passion and pride in craftsmanship.
WoodArt Workshop: Carving Wood in a Peaceful Setting

After visiting the museum, you walk down a small path to reach the open-air classroom, set right by the river. Across the water, you can see cornfields and hills in the distance. Honestly, it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful setting to focus on a hands-on activity.
The class lasts around 3 hours (or more, in my case), giving you plenty of time to dive into the process. It starts with a short briefing and a choice of the model you want to carve. You can go for something simple or challenge yourself with a more ambitious design at your own risk (which I did). I chose Goku from Dragon Ball Z.

Then it’s time to get carving. You’re provided with everything: a mallet, chisels, and most importantly, the helpful support from the artists. The team is there (I worked with Hata) to show you the right techniques, fix mistakes without making a fuss, and basically keep you from ruining it all.
You’re never left alone, even though everyone works at their own pace. There’s always someone watching and ready to help at the right moment. And you don’t need to be naturally crafty or artistic, they’re great at guiding beginners. It’s a serious workshop, but in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
At the end, they give you a WoodArt certificate of participation, a nice little souvenir to take home.

✅ What I Loved
- The variety of models: from traditional designs like fish to pop culture characters like Naruto or Marvel heroes, there’s something for everyone.
- The setting: deep in the countryside, right by the river, with open views over fields and hills. It’s calm and peaceful.
- The guidance: the team is present throughout the workshop, they guide you without being patronizing, and help you improve without ever doing the work for you.
- The teaching approach: they show you the right techniques, correct you when needed, and encourage you from start to finish.
- The end result: you leave with a wooden sculpture you made yourself. Even if it’s not perfect, it’s something to be proud of.
- The artisan atmosphere: it’s a family-run workshop, driven by passion, not a mass tourist activity.
