The Ultimate Guide to the Best Craft Workshops in Hoi An
Hoi An is known for its ancient town, beaches, and charming villages. But beyond that, the city offers another dimension to explore: its artisan workshops, true windows into local craftsmanship.
Whether you want to craft a traditional lantern, try your hand at pottery, or discover the art of working with bamboo, these workshops are much more than just activities. They are moments of sharing with passionate artisans, enriching encounters, and a deep dive into authenticity.
Let’s dive together into the world of Hoi An’s workshops.
Lantern-Making Workshop in Hoi An
Website: https://hoian-decouverte.com | Price: 290,000 VND per lantern | Hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Lanterns are the quintessential symbol of Hoi An, illuminating every alley with their vibrant and radiant colors. More than just decorative objects, they have been an integral part of local traditions for centuries. Taking part in a lantern-making workshop is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a traditional art and leave with a personalized keepsake from your stay in Hoi An.
During these workshops, you will be guided step by step through the process: selecting materials, assembling the bamboo frame, stretching the delicate fabric, and finally personalizing your lantern with designs or colors. Personally, I added my website logo, Good Morning Hoi An, to my lantern.
It’s worth noting that not all workshops involve crafting the lantern from start to finish; some focus solely on attaching the silk fabric.
I highly recommend the workshop offered by Hoi An Découverte. Their passionate artisans share more than just their expertise—they immerse you in the history and legends surrounding this iconic craft. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a unique (foldable) lantern. An unforgettable experience, whether you’re with family, friends, or exploring solo.
Tuồng Mask-Making Workshop in Hoi An
Address: 58/7 Le Loi, Hoi An | Price: 210,000 VND to 414,000 VND | Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Dive into the world of Tuồng masks, iconic elements of classical Vietnamese theater. These masks, with their vibrant colors and bold designs, were traditionally used to depict the personalities and stories of theatrical characters. Every detail holds symbolic meaning: red represents heroes, black signifies intense characters, and white is associated with female figures.
The Timing Masks, a family-run workshop led by artist Bui Quy Phong, offers two options: paint a pre-made mask for 210,000 VND or create your own mask from scratch for 414,000 VND. In the latter, you’ll learn to mold the papier-mâché base and decorate it to suit your style.
The workshops, open daily, are suitable for all ages, including children. Small groups can drop in without a reservation, while larger groups are encouraged to book in advance. Whether you’re a beginner or an artist, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with Vietnamese culture while creating a meaningful and personal souvenir.
Pottery Workshop in Thanh Ha Village
Address: Thanh Ha Pottery Village | Price: 490,000 VND
Just two kilometers from Hoi An’s ancient town, Thanh Ha Pottery Village is a living treasure of Vietnamese craftsmanship. Founded in the late 15th century, this village once supplied pottery to the Imperial Palace of Hue during the Nguyen dynasty. Today, it remains a must-visit destination for those eager to explore well-preserved ancestral traditions.
In Thanh Ha Village, local artisans will guide you in shaping clay on a traditional potter’s wheel. You’ll learn to create your own piece, whether it’s a small vase, a bowl, or even a more intricate creation. It’s much harder than it looks! By the end of the experience, you’ll leave with your own handmade item—a true symbol of your immersion in this ancient art.
Beyond the workshop, don’t miss the Terracotta Park, a modern museum showcasing historical and contemporary creations, as well as a miniature ceramic village featuring world-famous monuments. A truly enriching activity for both kids and adults alike.
Bamboo Workshop at Taboo Bamboo
Address: Thanh Tam Dong, Cam Thanh | Price: 700,000 VND per person | Duration: 3 hours | Hours: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM, closed on Sundays | Email: taboobambooworkshop@gmail.com
At Taboo Bamboo, sustainable craftsmanship takes center stage. This unique space, located at the foot of the Cua Dai Bridge and created by artisan Vo Tan Tan, immerses you in the fascinating world of bamboo. Everything here is made from bamboo: from the house to everyday objects, and even an electric car (in fact, that’s how I first discovered it)! It’s truly impressive to see how bamboo can be used to create almost anything.
During the 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn various crafting techniques and create your own bamboo item. Along with lantern-making, this is one of my favorite workshops. Suitable for anyone aged 5 and up, this activity perfectly combines creativity with ecological awareness. For the more adventurous, you can even request to build a bamboo bicycle!
With its warm, family-friendly atmosphere, Taboo Bamboo is a must-visit experience for anyone looking to explore a craft that’s both sustainable and authentic.
