3 Best airports near Hoi An
Does Hoi An have an airport? In short, no. Hoi An does not have its own airport or train station. However, I will introduce you to the three closest airports to Hoi An.
Firstly, travelers headed to Hoi An by air generally land at Da Nang International Airport, which is located just 35 km from Hoi An.
Then, traveling from Da Nang Airport to your hotel in Hoi An is relatively easy. There are many options available, ranging from local buses and taxis to reasonably priced private car services.
In this article, I review the best airports near Hoi An.
Da Nang International Airport
Located just 35 kilometers from Hoi An, in the heart of Da Nang, Da Nang International Airport serves as a gateway to Hoi An for most travelers. This airport, the third busiest in the country, offers all the necessary facilities to ensure a pleasant and hassle-free journey. Travelers can benefit from numerous services, such as free Wi-Fi, drinking water stations, kiosks for purchasing SIM cards, VIP lounges, various shops, as well as a wide range of dining and drinking options.
The journey to Hoi An can take from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on your choice of transport. There are so many transportation options to choose from. For example, private car, airport shuttle, local bus, tourist bus, and motorbike taxi. Therefore, to get all the details on transportation options and what suits you, be sure to read my article on “How to get from Da Nang to Hoi An“.
Phu Bai International Airport (Hue)
Phu Bai Airport is located 108 kilometers north of Hoi An and 15 kilometers north of downtown Hue. This is a small international airport with 2 terminals. and features a VIP lounge, a business class lounge, a dining area, refreshment zones, and souvenir shops. The airport primarily serves domestic flights, but it is gradually seeing an increase in international passengers.
Hoi An is best accessed by private car from Phu Bai. The journey can take from 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours. For more details, read my article: How to get from Hoi An to Hue and vice versa.
Tourists arriving at this airport often take the opportunity to visit Hue (Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, the mausoleums, etc.) before heading to Hoi An. On the way, you can pass through the legendary Hai Van Pass.
Chu Lai International Airport (Tam Ky)
Another option when coming to Hoi An is to consider Chu Lai International Airport. It is a small facility located 80 kilometers south of Hoi An and 33 kilometers south of Tam Ky.
Tam Ky is the largest city in Quang Nam province. Chu Lai has excellent connections to and from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and also serves a few international flights. These mainly come from Bangkok, Vientiane, and Beijing. The journey from Chu Lai to Hoi An will take about an hour and a half, making it another viable option for your trip to Vietnam.
It is rare for tourists to arrive from Chu Lai Airport. This airport is poorly served, and unlike Hue, the city of Tam Ky does not warrant a visit.
My Opinion
Despite the lack of an airport, Hoi An remains very accessible. The best and simplest option is to arrive in Hoi An via Da Nang International Airport.
Hoi An is an incredibly picturesque city and deserves to be on your Vietnam travel itinerary. Therefore, do not let the absence of an immediate airport deter you from including it in your plans. Traveling from Da Nang International Airport to Hoi An is very common and could not be easier.
