Looking for a peaceful spot, just steps from Hoi An’s Old Town? Cam Nam Island might just surprise you.

Many visitors pass by without even knowing it. Yet it’s literally a 3-minute walk from the Central Market, just across the bridge. No flashy lanterns, no heavy traffic, no tourist traps. Just a quiet, local island.

I’ve been living here for over 12 years, so I know the place quite well. In this article, I’ll share what I love (and what I don’t), what to do, where to eat, and who I think should visit.

Spoiler: it’s not the most “Instagrammable” place… and that’s exactly why it’s great.

Where is Cam Nam Island?

Cam Nam Island is located just across from Hoi An’s Central Market. All you need to do is cross the small bridge, on foot, by bicycle or motorbike. You’ll be there in under 5 minutes from the heart of the Old Town.

It’s super close, but not on most tourists’ radar. Why? Because there are no famous monuments, no alleys glowing with lanterns. And that’s great, it’s your chance to see a more rural and authentic side of Hoi An.

Since the opening of the new bridge, you can now do a full loop from the Old Town. The end of the island is still undeveloped, full of cornfields, which are actually a local specialty. That raw authenticity is what I enjoy most here.

Things to Do on Cam Nam Island

Cycling is, in my opinion, the best way to explore Cam Nam. The streets are quiet, the roads are flat, and you can stop anytime to watch local life, chat with a resident, or snap a photo of a buffalo.

As you wander, you might stumble upon a wood or lantern workshop, a small temple, or other local surprises. It really feels like the countryside, just minutes from the center.

Local tip: Don’t hesitate to take the small side roads instead of sticking to the island’s main road. Otherwise, you might think Cam Nam is boring—but it’s not!

In the late afternoon, the fishermen return and a small fish market quickly sets up in the northern part of the island. Vendors sort their catch in a rush, scooters unload dripping baskets… It’s raw, local, and full of life.

Feeling hungry? Try a crispy bánh đập, or a chè made with corn, the local sweet dessert made from corn grown right on the island. You’ll find a few food stalls and local eateries with direct views of the river and Hoi An’s Old Town. It’s a real pleasure to sip a coffee or fresh coconut there, especially at sunset.

If you’re into photography, the island is full of authentic moments and peaceful spots waiting to be captured.

Hoi An Memories Show from Cam Nam

Cam Nam isn’t just a peaceful escape or a spot for good food, it’s also one of the starting points to attend the Hoi An Memories show. The performance takes place on an island right across the river. In the beginning, there was no direct access from the Old Town, and Cam Nam was the only way to get there.

Today, the new bridge has changed that, but the show remains an experience you can easily enjoy while staying on Cam Nam, especially if you’re spending the evening nearby. Within a few minutes on foot or by bike, you’ll be at the entrance. Convenient, right?

If you’ve never heard of Hoi An Memories, it’s a huge open-air performance with over 500 performers, floating sets, and a visually stunning production. A great option if you’re looking for a unique cultural activity without leaving the neighborhood.

Where to Eat or Have a Drink with a View (Local Tip)

If you’re on the island in the late afternoon, I recommend grabbing a seat at one of the riverside restaurants just after the Cam Nam bridge. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer or a good meal with a view of the Old Town, and it’s a fantastic sunset spot.

My personal favorite? Nếm Kitchen Riverside BBQ. With a local vibe, tables right by the water, grilled skewers, seafood, cold beers… and a sunset over the yellow rooftops of Hoi An. It’s simple, non-touristy, and truly enjoyable.

The Hidden Heart of Local Craftsmanship

Cam Nam feels like the quiet backstage of Hoi An. What many visitors don’t realize is that most of the custom leather bags and handmade shoes sold in downtown shops aren’t crafted in fancy showrooms. They’re made right here on the island, in discreet workshops tucked inside modest homes, often at the end of a narrow alley or hidden courtyard.

You won’t see flashy signs or marketing slogans. Just craftsmen and women at work, sometimes with their families, cutting, sewing, assembling, fine-tuning. These skilled hands are the ones bringing your custom orders to life. Some well-known Hoi An brands work exclusively with these workshops, though customers rarely know it.

While riding around on a bike, you might hear the click of a sewing machine or the tap of a hammer on leather through a half-open door. This is where authentic craftsmanship begins: far from the spotlight, but full of passion and precision. If you’re curious, a friendly smile and a bit of luck might lead you into the hidden side of Hoi An’s artisan world.

Where to Stay on Cam Nam Island

Cam Nam is also a great place to stay in Hoi An, especially if you’re looking for more peace and quiet without being far from the action. The island is just a few minutes from the Old Town, either on foot or by bicycle, but the vibe is completely different, more relaxed and local.

Here are a few solid options depending on your style and budget:

In short, you don’t need to stay in the Old Town to enjoy Hoi An. Cam Nam offers the perfect base if you’re looking to avoid the crowds while remaining just a stone’s throw from everything.

What I Liked (and Didn’t Like)

What I really liked was the feeling of being in the countryside, even though it’s just 5 minutes from downtown Hoi An. Cam Nam still feels authentic, peaceful, and far from mass tourism. I love wandering without a plan, stopping for a coffee by the water, or chatting with a local fisherman.

Another great thing: you can observe real local life, with no staged scenes. No entry fees, no performances, just everyday life, as it is.

What I liked less? Well, don’t expect “wow” attractions. It’s a place to explore slowly, at your own rhythm. Also, there aren’t many signs or directions, so it’s better to follow your instinct (or Google Maps).

My Opinion: Is It Worth a Visit?

Yes, definitely, but not for everyone.

If you’re after big attractions or a structured tour, this isn’t the place. But if you love quiet spots, local life, and you’ve already explored Hoi An’s main highlights, then Cam Nam is worth the detour.

It’s perfect for families, leisure cyclists, or anyone wanting to escape the crowds without leaving the city.
