How to get from Phu Bai Airport to Hue? Taxi, bus, shuttle
If you arrive in Hue by plane, you will pass through Phu Bai International Airport, located about 15 kilometers from the city center. Once you have collected your luggage, the question quickly arises: how do you get from Phu Bai Airport to Hue?
The good news is that several options are available depending on your budget and comfort: taxi, bus, or shuttle. The journey is relatively short and, under normal traffic conditions, it usually takes 20 to 30 minutes to reach the center of Hue.
In this guide, I explain the different ways to get from Phu Bai Airport to Hue, including their advantages, approximate prices, and a few practical tips to help you choose the transport option that suits you best.
Phu Bai Airport at a glance

Originally, the airport was built during the French colonial period to meet the transportation needs of the imperial city. Later, under the Republic of Vietnam, it was modernized and renovated, gradually evolving into an international airport. Infrastructure was expanded to accommodate larger aircraft and to better organize regional air traffic.
In 2005, Phu Bai Airport welcomed its first international flights, marking a key milestone in its development. Two years later, in 2007, it was officially listed as an international airport of Vietnam by the Ministry of Transport. From that point on, Hue was no longer only connected domestically but became more open to international travel.
A major turning point came in December 2019, with the launch of construction for a second terminal. This new terminal, designed to handle up to 5 million passengers per year, was inaugurated on April 28, 2023. The goal is clear. To expand both domestic and international air connections and attract more visitors to Hue.
At the same time, other infrastructure elements such as the terminal itself, parking areas, and runways were modernized and expanded. Today, Phu Bai Airport is a modern facility, well adapted to the growth of tourism in central Vietnam and to Hue’s cultural importance.
Where is Phu Bai Airport located?

The airport is located about 15 kilometers south of Hue city center, in the Phu Bai area, part of Huong Thuy. Under normal conditions, you should expect between 25 and 30 minutes by car to reach the city center. Traffic in Hue is generally reasonable compared to larger Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi or Saigon.
The distance is ideal. You are not right next to the runway in the middle of the city, but you are still close enough for a quick and simple transfer.

How to reach Hue city center from the airport
This is obviously the question you will ask yourself once you step outside the terminal. The good news is that everything is straightforward.
1. Shuttle Bus
The shuttle bus remains the most economical option. The fare is around 50,000 VND per person, which is very affordable. However, it only departs once it is full, which can mean some waiting time depending on your arrival time.
It will drop you in the city center, but not necessarily at your hotel. If you are traveling light and on a budget, this can be a reasonable solution. After a long flight or with several suitcases, it may feel less comfortable.
2. Taxis
Taxis are available right outside the terminal. Several companies operate on site and use meters. The ride to Hue city center remains reasonably priced, especially if you are two or three people sharing the fare. I always recommend asking for an estimated price before getting in to avoid any confusion.
Overall, taxis in Hue are reliable, but as anywhere, it is better to be clear from the start. The advantage is obvious. You are dropped directly in front of your hotel without any detour.
3. Private Car
The simplest and most comfortable option remains a private car with door-to-door transfer. The driver waits for you at the exit with your name, helps with your luggage, and drives you directly to your accommodation. There is nothing to negotiate and nothing to explain. It is particularly convenient if you arrive late in the evening, travel with family, or have a lot of luggage. The price is higher than the shuttle, but the comfort and peace of mind make up for it.
Personally, when I want to avoid wasting time, I choose a private car. Distances in Hue are short, so the transfer is quick in any case. The key is simply to select the option that matches your budget and comfort level. I usually book through voiturepriveehue.com or Hoi An Transport Service. You should expect to pay between 250,000 and 350,000 VND for a 4-seater car.
4. Public Bus
If you prefer local transportation, several public bus lines pass through the Phu Bai area. This is clearly the cheapest option, but you need to accept less comfort and more travel time.
Route number 02 connects the North Bus Station to the South Bus Station via the Phu Bai Industrial Zone. It operates between 4:45 AM and 10:15 PM, with a fare of around 7,000 VND per person. It can be convenient if you stay near a bus station, but you may still need to walk or take a short taxi ride to reach your hotel.
Route number 07 also connects the North Bus Station to the Phu Bai Industrial Zone, with an extension to Lang Co. It runs between 5:15 AM and 6:00 PM, with a similar fare of around 7,000 VND per person. This route may be useful if you are heading toward the coast.
Route 10 operates between Dong Ba Bus Station and Cau Hai. It runs with four fixed departures per day at 7:30 AM, 11:15 AM, 4:30 PM, and 6:30 PM, and the fare is around 10,000 VND per ticket. Here, checking the schedule in advance is essential as departures are limited.
Finally, route 11 connects the North Bus Station to the Phu Bai Industrial Zone and continues to Vinh Hien. It operates between 9:45 AM and 7:00 PM, with a fare of approximately 7,000 VND per ride.
To be clear, these buses are very affordable, but they are not specifically designed for travelers with large suitcases. If you have a backpack and time, they can work. With multiple bags or after a tiring flight, you will likely find a taxi or private car far more comfortable.
My opinion
Phu Bai Airport is simple, efficient, and quick. You do not waste time and you can be in Hue city center in less than thirty minutes. For a stay in the former imperial capital, it is a practical and well-organized gateway. If you plan your transfer in advance, everything runs smoothly and you start your trip under the best conditions.
